Possibility of the trade of Hong Kong being

permanently diverted to neighbouring Chinese portsť

In a message from its Hong Kong

the

correspondent published in the "Times" of 25th January, itwas stated that Canton is energetically endeavouring to raise a large sum from the Chinese locally and abroad in order to develop the port of Whampoa as a rival to Hong Kong, and that an

association having this object had been formed.

The report further stated that the Canton

newspapers had published a proposal to impose a 5%

customs sur tax for the purpose of raising £500,000

to deepen the Canton river, construct wharves, forts

and so on.

Further evidence of the growing independence

of Canton is furnished in a secret despatch from the

Governor
